| Where
the outdoors are still truly great! Barrowburn
is truly a unique place, "The Land of the Far Horizon"
and a place where nature in all its forms can never be ignored.
The
River Coquet, one of England's great game fishing rivers, runs
past the entrance to Barrowburn Farm itself. The river cuts a
winding path from these high hills until it meets the North Sea
at Warkworth (with it's famous castle).
Northumberland is a county that has never lost
its true border spirit. These were once violent, debated lands,
and memories of less peaceful times are abundant throughout the
landscape. In fact, Northumberland has more castles and fortified
houses than any other English county.
The
landscape of the upper Coquet valley was once a land of outlaws,
with many place names bearing testament to both the brutality
and romance of the old days: Bloodybush Edge, King's Seat, Beefstand
Hill to name but a few. Later times brought with it it's own brand
of outlaw, as these hills were once dotted with illicit whiskey
distilleries providing duty free spirit cooled by the many fresh
springs of clear water that bubble from the hillside.
Spending time in a location like this can not
fail to leave a lasting, indelible impression. This is a place
like no-other. Come spring time and early summer, the ancient
hay meadows located just below The Deer Hut (A Site of Special
Scientific Intrest) are alive with rare wild flowers supporting
a myriad of insects and butterflies native to the region.
Once
the first snows of winter fall, the place is transformed into
a veritable Christmas card scene which has provided creative inspiration
for many photographers and artists from all over the world.
Looking over to the Scottish Border just a few
miles north, whatever the season and whatever the weather, provides
views to inspire and remember for a lifetime.
